Riaantv Explainer | How Cyber Fraud is Targeting Hyderabad Citizens and What You Should Know

Hyderabad: Cyber fraud is no longer a distant or occasional threat. It has quietly become a daily risk for ordinary citizens, cutting across age groups, professions and digital awareness levels.

Over the past few months, police advisories and complaint patterns suggest a noticeable rise in cases involving online financial fraud, impersonation calls and misleading digital links. What is concerning is not just the number of cases, but how convincingly these scams are being executed.

Many of these frauds begin with something seemingly routine — a phone call claiming to be from a bank official, a message about KYC verification, or a link promising cashback or account updates. In several cases, victims are persuaded to share OTPs or click on links that give fraudsters remote access to their devices.

According to police officials, one of the most common patterns emerging is the misuse of trust. Fraudsters often create urgency, convincing individuals that their bank account may be blocked or that a transaction requires immediate verification. In such situations, panic overrides caution.

Another growing concern is the use of fake customer care numbers. Citizens searching online for helpline numbers often end up calling fraudulent contacts listed on unverified websites. These interactions frequently lead to financial loss within minutes.

From ground interactions and reporting, it is evident that awareness still has gaps, especially among first-time digital users and elderly citizens. While digital banking and online transactions have made life easier, they have also created new vulnerabilities that many are still learning to navigate.

Hyderabad Police have repeatedly issued advisories urging citizens not to share OTPs, passwords or banking details under any circumstances. They have also emphasised that no legitimate bank or government authority will ask for sensitive financial information over phone calls or messages.

Simple precautions can make a significant difference. Avoid clicking on unknown links, verify phone numbers from official websites, and take a moment to cross-check any message that creates urgency. In the digital space, a few seconds of caution can prevent major financial loss.

At the same time, there is a larger need for continuous awareness. Cyber safety cannot be treated as a one-time campaign. As technology evolves, so do the methods used by fraudsters. Regular public awareness, especially at the community level, is essential.

From a reporting perspective, what stands out is that many victims hesitate to come forward immediately, either due to embarrassment or uncertainty. This delay often reduces the chances of recovery. Police advise that complaints should be filed without delay through official cybercrime portals or helplines.

The reality is simple — cyber fraud today is not limited to the digitally unaware. Even informed users can fall prey if caught off guard at the right moment.

As Hyderabad continues to grow as a digital and urban hub, awareness must grow alongside it. Technology has brought convenience, but it also demands responsibility.

In the end, staying alert is not optional anymore — it is necessary.

Because in the digital world, prevention remains the strongest protection.
