BJP wins Falta repoll by massive margin; Debangshu Panda breaks long-held political pattern

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the repoll for West Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency on Sunday, with party candidate Debangshu Panda winning by a margin of more than one lakh votes in a result that has drawn political attention beyond the constituency.

According to the final outcome, Debangshu Panda received 1,49,666 votes and emerged as the winner with a lead of 1,09,021 votes over his nearest rival. CPI(M) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi finished in second position with 40,645 votes, while Congress candidate Abdur Razzak Molla secured 10,084 votes. Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominee Jahangir Khan slipped to fourth position and polled 7,783 votes.

The result assumes significance as Falta had largely remained under the political influence of the Trinamool Congress in recent years.

The repoll was held after voting conducted earlier in the constituency during the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections was cancelled following allegations of irregularities and concerns over the polling process. Fresh polling across all 285 booths was conducted under enhanced security arrangements.

Political attention had intensified in the constituency after allegations surfaced regarding tampering attempts and procedural concerns during the earlier round of polling.

Repolling was later conducted under close monitoring and additional deployment of central security forces.

Counting began in the morning and early trends quickly indicated a strong lead for the BJP candidate.

As counting progressed through successive rounds, Panda steadily widened the gap over his competitors. By the middle stages of counting, the lead had crossed several tens of thousands of votes before eventually moving beyond the one lakh mark.

The scale of the victory transformed what was expected to be a closely watched repoll into one of the most discussed constituency outcomes of the election cycle.

An unusual aspect of the contest was the position of the Trinamool Congress candidate.

Ahead of the repoll, Jahangir Khan had publicly announced that he would not continue in the contest, although procedural timelines meant his name remained on the ballot and Electronic Voting Machines. The party had described the decision as his personal choice.

Political observers are expected to closely study voting patterns and turnout trends in Falta, particularly because the constituency witnessed intense campaigning and remained under public attention after the earlier controversy.

With the repoll result now declared, focus in West Bengal shifts back to the broader electoral picture and how outcomes in closely watched seats may influence political narratives in the state.

Background: Falta, located in South 24 Parganas district, had remained an important political constituency in southern West Bengal and was largely considered a Trinamool Congress stronghold over the past two decades, barring limited interruptions. This year, however, the constituency came under unusual public and political attention after the original polling held on April 29 during the second phase of the Assembly elections was countermanded following allegations of irregularities and concerns related to the voting process.

Fresh polling was subsequently conducted across all 285 booths under heightened security and administrative supervision. The repoll recorded strong voter participation and remained largely peaceful. The final outcome has added a new political dimension to the constituency, as the scale of the BJP’s victory and the shift in voting pattern are likely to become a subject of discussion in the wider context of West Bengal’s changing electoral landscape and future political strategy across the state.
