The chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Prof. Mohammad Yunus, met with UK trade envoy Baroness Rosie Winterton to discuss the timing of upcoming parliamentary elections, potentially set for December this year or June next year.
Yunus indicated that the election date hinges on the interim government’s reform implementation; minor reforms could enable December elections, while significant reforms might delay them until June. He emphasized Bangladesh’s critical transformative phase, with the interim government prioritizing institutional reconstruction.
Discussions also included strategic cooperation in areas like education and defense. Yunus, leading a comprehensive reform agenda, noted that six reform commissions have submitted reports, and talks with political parties for national consensus are ongoing.
