Prez Murmu arrives in Lisbon for historic State visits to Portugal and Slovak Republic

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has arrived in Lisbon for a historic state visit to Portugal at the invitation of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. This visit marks the first state visit by an Indian president to Portugal in over 25 years and coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During her stay on April 7 and 8, President Murmu will meet with key Portuguese leaders, including the President, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, and the Speaker of the Parliament, to discuss enhancing trade, economic cooperation, and cultural exchanges. She will also share engagements with the Indian community in Portugal.

In a post on X, the ministry of external affairs had described the visit as a “landmark” moment that will deepen India’s multifaceted engagement with Portugal and the broader European Union.

Following Portugal, President Murmu will travel to Slovakia on April 9, marking the first visit by an Indian president to Slovakia in nearly 30 years, where she will meet President Peter Pellegrini and others to foster trade and cultural ties.
