Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday at the age of 37. Over his career, he accumulated 4,301 runs across 67 Tests, averaging 40.57 with a strike rate of 57.05. He recorded 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, debuting with a century against West Indies at Eden Gardens in 2013.

Rohit shared the news through an Instagram post, expressing his gratitude for the support he received while representing India in Test matches, and confirmed his intention to continue playing in the ODI format.

Initially, Rohit struggled to secure a permanent spot as a middle-order batsman due to inconsistent performances. However, after being promoted to the opening position in 2019, he excelled, especially during his standout year in 2021 when he scored 906 runs at 47.68.

Unfortunately, 2024 marked a downturn for Rohit, averaging only 24.76 runs and ultimately being dropped from the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, wherein India lost 1-3. His retirement announcement comes ahead of a five-match Test series against England in June, suggesting a transitional phase for the Indian team with new leadership and possible opening choices.
