On Tuesday afternoon, terrorists launched an attack at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, Kashmir, killing 26 people, mostly tourists, marking the deadliest incident in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack. Among the deceased were two foreigners and two locals.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the assault as unprecedentedly severe against civilians. The attack occurred around 3 PM, coinciding with the tourism season and the visit of US Vice President J D Vance to India. Baisaran, known as ‘mini Switzerland,’ attracts many visitors with its expansive natural beauty.
Witnesses reported that armed assailants fired at tourists engaging in various leisure activities, resulting in at least 20 injuries. The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility, with indications that the terrorists had crossed into the region from Kishtwar. Union Home Minister Amit Shah updated Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Saudi Arabia, before heading to Srinagar for an emergency security review.
In a statement on X, I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover swiftly. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected,” the Prime Minister posted on X.
“Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice… they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to combat terrorism is unshakable and will become even stronger,” he added
Eyewitness accounts described a chaotic scene of terror, with cries for help amidst bloodshed as many innocent people enjoyed their day.
