As the Winter Session of Parliament began this week, disruptions have led to the adjournment of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Amidst this, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is scheduled to hold a meeting on Wednesday. The members of the committee are expected to present their own amendments to the proposed law.
However, the opposition members have requested an extension to the panel’s tenure. BJP leader V. Muraleedharan has accused Congress and Communist parties of playing a double game on the issue of the Waqf amendment bill.
On one hand, they support protests by minority communities in Kerala and Cochin, but in Delhi they oppose the rightful authority of people holding their property.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has also raised concerns about the bill, calling it a grave violation of Article 26 of the Constitution. He has alleged that the government intends to eradicate the Waqf Board instead of strengthening it through this bill.
The JPC has held multiple meetings since August 22, reviewing the work of six ministries and around 195 organizations.
