Assamese ‘Phoolam Gamocha’ gets GI tag, huge enthusiasm across the state

Guwahatin: Piyush Hazarika, Minister for Water Resources, Information and Public Relations, Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Assam has said that today is a proud moment for Assam. He has said that ‘Phoolam Gamocha’, the beloved symbol of our Assamese culture and tradition, has been awarded the Geographical Indication Tag (GI Tag) by the Government of India.

Hazarika tweeted a post on social media saying that today is a very proud moment for all of us and we express our deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving this honor to Assam.

The wave of happiness has run across the state after Assamese Gamocha got the GI tag. There is a lot of enthusiasm about it in different parts of the state, especially in the weaving community. On getting the news of this in many areas, women weavers have expressed their happiness by dancing and singing.

It is worth mentioning that today Assamese Phoolam Gamocha has become famous not only in the country but also in other countries. This fame and the honor given to it by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, since then, immense affection for it has increased in the whole country. This is the reason that on the call of the local weavers, the state government also made a strict law regarding fake gamochha, so that the local weavers can get a fair price for their skills and their hard work.
