Elections in Myanmar have not been postponed despite the COVID 19 surge

Myanmar Election Commission rejects postponement of general elections in the country due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

In an online conversation with the media, the Myanmar Union Electoral Commission (UEC) promised to hold elections, ensuring measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the country.

Last week, 24 parties, including the military-backed main opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), demanded the postponement of the election citing campaign and other public health issues.

The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), led by state councilor Aung San Suu Kyi, will support holding elections on the date announced by the UEC.
