Hyderabad: The Lok Sabha elections for the 17 seats, including Hyderabad, are underway in Telangana with voters lining up to cast their votes on Monday.
The main contenders for the Hyderabad seat are All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Madhavi Latha. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy also exercised his franchise in Telangana’s Barkatpura. Currently, there are seven assembly segment areas under the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, including Malakpet, Karwan, Goshamahal, Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura, and Bahadurpura.
The AIMIM has held the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat since 1984, with Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi and Asaduddin Owaisi as MPs. This year, the Congress has fielded its Hyderabad district president Sameer Waliullah, while the BRS has nominated Gaddam Srinivas. If Asaduddin Owaisi wins again, it will be his fifth consecutive win as the MP from Hyderabad since 2004. The polling in Hyderabad is crucial as it is considered a stronghold of the AIMIM party.
