Indian Railways has initiated a trial run by installing an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) aboard the Manmad-CSMT Panchvati Express in Maharashtra, marking the country’s first such endeavor. The trial, conducted on April 10, was announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who shared the news via a video on social media. This initiative, dubbed “ATM on Wheels,” aims to enhance passenger convenience and explore innovative non-fare revenue streams as directed by the Railway Board.
The ATM is securely bolted and fitted with rubber pads to mitigate vibration, with two fire extinguishers placed nearby for safety. The mini pantry section of the train has been converted into a secure space for the ATM. If the trial proves successful, it may pave the way for more ATMs on trains, especially on long-distance routes, thus improving access to banking facilities in areas lacking financial infrastructure.
This on-train ATM project complements Indian Railways’ modernization efforts under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, focusing on enhancing passenger experiences and upgrading infrastructure through modern technology.
