Trump Imposes 104% Tariff on China, Effective from today

Tensions between the United States and China over tariffs have escalated significantly. President Trump announced a 104 percent tariff on select Chinese imports, effective April 09, in retaliation to China’s imposition of a 34 percent tariff on US goods.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized that the decision was made following China’s refusal to retract its tariffs, asserting the US would not tolerate unfair trade practices.

Initially, Trump threatened a 50 percent tariff unless China withdrew its own tariffs by April 08, but the rate has now risen to 104 percent.

In response, China’s Ministry of Commerce condemned the US action, describing it as “one mistake on top of another” and warned of repercussions that could destabilize global markets.
